As products continue to evolve and get better, it is easier than ever to maintain healthy, shiny hair, even with all the daily styling we do to it. My new favorite product is the spray-in Leave-In Hair Conditioner. These conditioners are lightweight and offer the benefits of a deep conditioning treatment in seconds. Here are the conditioning types:

Heat Protection - Designed to protect hair from damage caused by blow-dryers, irons and add conditioning benefits.

Hair Repair - Serious hair repair and maintenance can be achieved with these outstanding conditioners. They strengthen hair, are a superior detangler, add silkiness and shine, are humidity resistant, provides color protecttion, helps split ends and eliminates frizz.

Detangling & Moisturizing – Hydrates, detangles, tames frizz and leaves hair soft and smooth without weighing it down.

Don’t be afraid to layer the detangling conditioner with the heat protection or the hair repair leave-in. But don’t be too heavy handed, though, it just takes a few sprays. Now, there is no reason to deal with damaged, dry, unruly hair….

So, the most important step to an amazing makeup is fabulous looking skin and often using foundation is the way to achieve it.  Most of us generally don’t like wearing heavy foundations and the wrong foundation is a dead give away to a bad makeup application.  As time goes on, products are becoming more and more advanced and it’s now easy to get flawless looking skin with bb creams and foundations.  Foundations used to seen as a detriment to healthy skin but now with all kinds fabulous ingredients to help prime, hydrate, protect with spf and help with anti-aging, they can actually be part of a healthy skin care regimen.

I’m happy to see more makeup companies include colors to match tanned and darker skin tones and also love that great makeup comes in all price ranges from budget friendly drugstore brands to high-end department store and pro brands.

A few tips for flawless foundation application:

  1. I like to mix a little bb cream with the foundation before applying. (I use a cd as a palette)
  2. Apply with a brush, you will need less product.
  3. If you need a fuller coverage (for blemishes or uneven areas), apply with a damp beauty blender sponge in a dabbing manner (called stippling) That way the makeup will stay where you put it.
  4. Set with a translucent powder using a big fluffy brush.

Anyone who knows me knows that I am not a Christmas Holiday fan. (Too many reasons to cover now).  But what I do like about this time of year, from a makeup artist point of view, is all the gift sets of makeup that are available.  This is the best time to get great makeup (great palettes and gift sets) from your favorite brands at reduced prices from Sephora.  Here are a few to check out and perhaps pickup before they are gone for the season.  And, don’t forget to update your brushes…… Have fun… -Valerie

I love doing Red Carpet and press events for talent and I was really grateful to be able to get another Hollywood Reporter cover (the first one was 2 years ago) doing Octavia Spencer for their December 6the issue featuring The Actresses. You can imagine my surprise when I discovered that at the shoot was Emma Thompson, Julia Roberts, Lupita Nyong’o, Amy Adams and Oprah Winfrey. It was so fun to be able to hang out the with famous Glam Squads and I picked up a few tips. I love the cover, it came out so beautiful. Until the next one…….

For our current issue of Regard Magazine we did a fabulous cover editorial shoot with Roselyn Sanchez who is currently playing Carmen Luna in Lifetime’s summer hit show, Devious Maids. I had a fabulous time doing her hair and makeup for the shoot. I love making quick hair changes for each outfit and when she wore this gorgeous purple satin dress  with the black lace detail in the back (by Rafael Cennamo), I knew it called for a sexy low bun.

Roselyn has super thick hair so the key to doing her bun are these super heavy duty hair pins that I use to hold it all together.  Believe it or not, I used 4 pins for this look. Here is the step by step instructions and pictorial of how I achieved the look:

  1. 1  First, take a section from the front side and twist it towards the back.
  2. 2  Next, I take a section from the other front side and twist it towards the back and use a pin to secure both sections.
  3. 3  Then, I split the back in half and twist it into a semi bun and pin.
  4. 4  Finally,  I take the other half of the back section and twist it around the semi bun to complete the bun and pin. I add another pin to stabalize the bun and Voila!!

This took about 3 minutes, and as you can see came out really nice.
