So, the most important step to an amazing makeup is fabulous looking skin and often using foundation is the way to achieve it.  Most of us generally don’t like wearing heavy foundations and the wrong foundation is a dead give away to a bad makeup application.  As time goes on, products are becoming more and more advanced and it’s now easy to get flawless looking skin with bb creams and foundations.  Foundations used to seen as a detriment to healthy skin but now with all kinds fabulous ingredients to help prime, hydrate, protect with spf and help with anti-aging, they can actually be part of a healthy skin care regimen.

I’m happy to see more makeup companies include colors to match tanned and darker skin tones and also love that great makeup comes in all price ranges from budget friendly drugstore brands to high-end department store and pro brands.

A few tips for flawless foundation application:

  1. I like to mix a little bb cream with the foundation before applying. (I use a cd as a palette)
  2. Apply with a brush, you will need less product.
  3. If you need a fuller coverage (for blemishes or uneven areas), apply with a damp beauty blender sponge in a dabbing manner (called stippling) That way the makeup will stay where you put it.
  4. Set with a translucent powder using a big fluffy brush.

Anyone who knows me knows that I am not a Christmas Holiday fan. (Too many reasons to cover now).  But what I do like about this time of year, from a makeup artist point of view, is all the gift sets of makeup that are available.  This is the best time to get great makeup (great palettes and gift sets) from your favorite brands at reduced prices from Sephora.  Here are a few to check out and perhaps pickup before they are gone for the season.  And, don’t forget to update your brushes…… Have fun… -Valerie

It’s amazing how fast time seems to fly….. It’s already the end of August and I feel that another year is almost at an end!  Jeeze Louise….well at least the summer here in Los Angeles was rather pleasant.  I had a chance to visit New York a couple of times and I really am Thankful that we do not get the humidity that I experience there.  So, with that said,  here are my favorite summer things…..

Jet Magazine editorial with Octavia Spencer and Michael B Jordan from Fruitvale Station movie.

I got the chance to do Octavia’s hair and makeup for her Jet Magazine cover and editorial for The Fruitvale Station movie. This is one of my favorite movies of the summer and if you haven’t seen it, check it out. The director, Ryan Coogler, who also wrote the movie, did an amazing job of telling an important human story with a sensitive but caring hand. I also loved the ensemble cast and  Melanie Garcia and Michael B Jordan had a lot of chemistry. Plus, it was interesting to see Oakland, a city I lived in for 17 years, as a backdrop.

I am loving Miss Janelle Monae’s Queen video featuring Erykah Badu!! She always has a fabulous beat but I also love the positivity in her lyrics. “while you selling dope, we gonn keep selling HOPE…” Check her out!!

I finally got a chance to see India.aire at the Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl in June and she was really good. Again, I love her positive messages and my favorite song is ‘Just Do You’  She doesn’t have a video for the song so here is a live performance she did on the Steve Harvey Morning Show…..

Another fabulous artist that I saw at the Playboy Jazz Festival is an amazing singer/ saxophonist/ composer/ lyricist/ arranger/ producer/ educator Grace Kelly!  I Love jazz and am so sad that it has almost disappeared from our musical landscape. This was my first time seeing Miss Grace, and I really loved her performance.  She is truly a master musician! Here is a video so you can see for yourself her amazing talent…..

Hope you had a fantastic summer………Cheers,

Valerie

Growing succulent plants has turned me into a gardener, of sorts! In my college days I had a pretty good green thumb and had lots of indoor plants for decor around the house. Then suddenly, I couldn’t keep a plant alive no matter what I tried. So I gave up on growing plants.

But, then a friend gave me a piece of her jade plant succulent and I found that the drought tolerant plant was easy to grow. Succulents are low maintenance, eye-catching colorful plants that are easy to grow. Their drought tolerance makes them a perfect choice for the high desert that is Los Angeles and for folks who lack a green thumb like me.

So, now everywhere I go, I like to take pictures of succulents. Each plant looks like a sculpture to me and there are so many varieties, and amazing shapes and colors they are fun to collect.

spring things pic

Spring is here and summer closing is coming fast and as the weather gets warmer, it is a perfect time to pair down our beauty routines.  So, here are my 5 beauty must-haves to take you from spring through summer…. Actually, they are great favorites for all-year round use.

1  Facial Cleansing Cloths/Makeup Removers are a must.  They are perfect for removing make-up, or just giving your face a freshening up on a hot day.  The Equate brand from Wal-Mart is my favorite for the value (2 packs of 30 for half the price of other brands). These alcohol-free, hypoallergenic makeup removing facial towelettes contain chamomile, vitamin E, and triple tea, which rejuvenate your skin. And they don’t leave your face feeling dry and tight.

2 Brighten and protect your skin with a BB Cream. I like the Maybelline brand because It not only blurs imperfections, but it also brightens and evens your skin tone with sheer coverage like a tinted moisturizer. With SPF 30 protection, the Maybelline BB Cream also hydrates, enhances and protects your skin from the harsh rays of the sun. BB cream is skincare and makeup all in one step, which is ideal for those on the go.

3 I think eye cream is a must and one of my favorites is Murad’s Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture for eyes. This super-hydrating cream infuses the delicate eye area with moisture for immediate and long term relief from dryness and Maintains optimal moisture levels for about 8 hours and is gentle enough for sensitive skin.

4 Tinted lip stain is my new mainstay. It gives a nice and long lasting color without being sticky. There are lots of brands to choose from, I like the Maybelline Super Stay 10.

5 My last must have are oil blotting papers. These sheets instantly absorb oil and transforms shiny skin into matte perfection. I love the Elf brand sheets for their value and soothing green tea extract.

Let me know what you think….. Cheers, Val
